Why magnesium matters

NIH notes that magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems and participates in blood glucose control, energy production, nerve function and many other processes.

What supplementation studies show

NCCIH cites reviews suggesting magnesium supplementation may influence insulin sensitivity or glucose control in some groups, while also noting the evidence is insufficient for clinical guidelines.

Dose and tolerability

Supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhea and abdominal cramping. NCCIH notes an adult upper limit of 350 mg per day from supplements and medications unless a healthcare provider recommends otherwise.

Magnesium in a multi-ingredient formula

If magnesium is one part of a 20-ingredient supplement, check how much the daily serving contributes and whether you already take magnesium elsewhere.
